Mixing bowls and a whisk
- 6 cups day-old bread brioche, challah, or French bread cut into cubes
- 4 eggs
- 2 cups milk or half-and-half
- ¾ cup sugar
- 2 Tbsp melted butter
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- ¼ tsp nutmeg
- ½ cup raisins optional
Toss the bread cubes in a greased baking dish.
Whisk the eggs, milk, sugar, melted butter, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg together.
Pour the mixture over the bread, press down gently, and let it soak for 30 minutes.
Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 50–60 minutes until puffed and golden.
Brioche is a luxurious choice, but any sturdy bread works well. Serve with vanilla custard, caramel, or bourbon sauce.
