Ingredients
  

  • 6 cups day-old bread brioche, challah, or French bread cut into cubes
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 cups milk or half-and-half
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 2 Tbsp melted butter
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract 
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • ½ cup raisins optional

Instructions
 

  • Toss the bread cubes in a greased baking dish.
  • Whisk the eggs, milk, sugar, melted butter, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg together.
  • Pour the mixture over the bread, press down gently, and let it soak for 30 minutes.
  • Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 50–60 minutes until puffed and golden.

Notes

Brioche is a luxurious choice, but any sturdy bread works well. Serve with vanilla custard, caramel, or bourbon sauce.
